DEFINING BIBLICAL TYPOLOGY
Typology: a person, office, place, institution, event, or thing in salvation history that anticipates, shares correspondences with, escalates toward, and resolves in Jesus
MOSES
1/ Moses was born an Israelite, just as Jesus was born an Israelite.
Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. Exodus 2:1-2, NIV
2/ Moses was born under harsh Gentile rule, just as Jesus was born under harsh Gentile rule.
“The Israelites have become far too numerous for us. Come, we must deal shrewdly with them…” Exodus 1:9-10, NIV
3/ Moses escaped infanticide, just as Jesus escaped infanticide.
Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.” Exodus 1:22, NIV
4/ Moses was adopted, just as Jesus was adopted.
When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. Exodus 2:10, NIV
5/ Moses was the Prince of Egypt, just as Jesus is the Prince of Peace.

Moses fled from Pharaoh (in Egypt) and went to live in Midian… Exodus 2:15, NIV
Jesus’ coming out of Egypt was a major prophetic fulfillment.
9/ Moses saved women at a well, just as Jesus saved a woman at a well.
Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water… Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue… Exodus 2:16-17, NIV
Luke’s gospel reveals the special attention Jesus gave to the marginalized, including women.
10/ Moses descended from royalty, just as Jesus descended from royalty.
Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian… Exodus 3:1, NIV
The kenosis is Christ accommodating humanity.
11/ Moses had a connection with Gentiles, just as Jesus had a connection with Gentiles.
Jethro said, “Go, and I wish you well.” Exodus 2:18
12/ Moses was a shepherd, just as Jesus is the Good Shepherd.
Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian… Exodus 3:1, NIV
14/ Moses turned water into blood, just as the Two Witnesses will turn water into blood.
(Moses) raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood. Exodus 7:20, NIV
There are several opinions for who the Two Witnesses of Revelation may be.
15/ Moses miracles confirmed his work, just as Jesus’ miracles confirmed His work.
Then the Lord said, “If they do not believe you or pay attention to the first sign, they may believe the second.” Exodus 4:8, NIV
Jesus’ miracles reveal He is Lord over both spiritual and physical realms.

1/ Moses used a physical rod, just as Jesus used a spiritual rod.
And (Moses) took the staff of God in his hand. Exodus 4:20, NIV
2/ Moses led an exodus out of physical bondage, just as Jesus led an exodus out of spiritual bondage.
The Israelites went up out of Egypt… Exodus 13:18, NIV
3/ Moses faced rejection from his own people, just as Jesus faced rejection from His own people.
“But our ancestors refused to obey (Moses). Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.” Acts 7:39, NIV
4/ Moses fasted 40 days, just as Jesus fasted 40 days.
Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. Exodus 34:28a, NIV
5/ Moses received a word from Mount Sinai, just as Jesus delivered a word from the Mount of Beatitudes.
And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments. Exodus 34:28b, NIV
6/ Moses asked God to forgive his people, just as Jesus asked God to forgive His people.
“In accordance with Your great love, forgive the sin of these people…” Numbers 14:19, NIV
7/ Moses was envied, just as Jesus was envied.
In the camp they grew envious of Moses… Psalm 106:16, NIV
8/ Moses’ life was threatened, just as Jesus’ life was threatened.
Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” Exodus 17:4, NIV
9/ Moses experienced great sorrow, just as Jesus experienced great sorrow.
“I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me.” Numbers 11:14, NIV
10/ Moses pronounced judgments, just as Jesus pronounced judgments.
“But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.” Numbers 16:30, NIV
11/ Moses was a man of prayer, just as Jesus is a Man of prayer.
The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then Moses said to him, “If you Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” Exodus 33:15, NIV
12/ Moses provides people with physical water, just as Jesus provides people with spiritual water.
Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. Numbers 20:11, NIV
13/ Moses was a covenant mediator, just as Jesus is a covenant Mediator.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” Exodus 34:27, NIV

(Moses) took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. Numbers 11:25, NIV
