TYPOLOGY: ADAM MAY 18, 2022

DEFINING BIBLICAL TYPOLOGY

Typology: a person, office, place, institution, event, or thing in salvation history that anticipates, shares correspondences with, escalates toward, and resolves in Jesus

ADAM

Adam…was a type of the one who was to come. Romans 5:14, ESV

In many ways, Adam is both like Christ and unlike Christ.

1/ Adam was the head of the old creation, just as Jesus is the head of the new creation.

For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Romans 5:19, ESV

2/ Adam was to reign over all the earth, just as Jesus will reign over all the earth forever.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over… Genesis 1:28, NIV

They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. Revelation 20:4, ESV

3/Adam was put to sleep to produce Eve, just as Jesus was put to death to produce the Church.

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man made into a woman. Genesis 2:21-22, ESV

4/ Adam made a way for condemnation and death, while Jesus made a way for justification and life.

…death reigned from the time of Adam… Romans 5:14, ESV

…the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Romans 5:15, ESV

5/ Adam was tempted and failed, while Jesus was tempted and was faithful.

The tree was a test of obedience for Adam and the desert was a test for Jesus.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Matthew 5:17, ESV

6/ Adam turned from the Father in the Garden of Eden, while Jesus turned to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane.

“Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me. Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.” Luke 22:42, ESV

7/ Adam was naked and unashamed, while Jesus was naked and bore our shame.

And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. Genesis 2:25, ESV

8/ Adam brought thorns, while Jesus worn a crown of thorns.

(The ground) will produce thorns and thistles for you… Genesis 3:18, NIV

9/ Adam tried to become like God, while Jesus became like man.

“…you will be like God…” Genesis 3:5, NIV

…have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Philippians 2:6-8, NIV

10/ Adam sinned at a tree, while Jesus bore our sins on a tree.

11/ Adam died for his sin, while Jesus died for the sins of others.

12/ Adam was the first husband, while Jesus is the last Husband.

13/ Adam died and returned to the ground, while Jesus died and returned to heaven.

TYPOLOGY: ABRAHAM & ISAAC MAY 18, 2022

DEFINING BIBLICAL TYPOLOGY

Typology: a person, office, place, institution, event, or thing in salvation history that anticipates, shares correspondences with, escalates toward, & resolves in Jesus

ABRAHAM and ISAAC

Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness. Genesis 15:6, NIV

1/ Abraham was a foreigner, just as Jesus was a foreigner.

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” Genesis 12:1, NIV

2/ Abraham initiated the old covenant, just as Jesus initiated the new covenant.

“You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.” Genesis 17:11, ESV

For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Galatians 6:15, ESV

3/ Abraham interceded for Sodom, just as Jesus intercedes for the world.

So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Genesis 18:22, ESV

4/ Abraham may have encountered the Trinity, just as Jesus encountered the Trinity at baptism.

And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. Genesis 18:1-2, ESV

5/ Isaac was prophesied, just as Jesus was prophesied.

The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” Gen 18:10

6/ Isaac came through a miraculous conception, just as Jesus came through a miraculous conception.

Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. So Sarah laughed to herself… Genesis 18:11-12, ESV

7/ Abraham offered his only son Isaac, just as God offered his only Son Jesus.

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love…” Genesis 22:2, NIV

8/ Isaac carried his own wood, just as Jesus carried His own cross.

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. Genesis 22:6, NIV

9/ Isaac was spared through a sacrificial death, just as we are spared through Jesus’ sacrificial death.

Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. Genesis 22:13, NIV
