There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the

common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.

Now there are varieties of gifts…v. 4

Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion

of his faith; if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Prophecy – Service – Teaching – Exhortation – Giving – Leading – Mercy

And there are varieties of ministries…v. 5

And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ…

1. Cessationists – “most of these manifestations have ceased with the completion of Scripture."

2. Cautious Continuationists – “these manifestations still operate but are governed by Scripture.”

3. Charismatics – “these manifestations operate and are sometimes placed on par with Scripture.”

4. Pentecostals – “these manifestations operate and some are proof you have the Holy Spirit.”

But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit… v. 7

…for the common good. v. 7.

But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. v. 11

Word of wisdom - speaking wisdom given by the Holy Spirit to someone in a time of need.

Word of knowledge – speaking with definite truth about specific situations in moments that only God and the hearer may know about.

Faith - ability to believe when others don’t – or to trust God through insurmountable obstacles, difficulty and suffering.

Gifts of healings - when God supernaturally answers our prayers for hurting people to heal them.

Acts 3:12

“…why are you amazed at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we had made him walk?”

Miracles – God’s intervening action where there is no natural explanation.

John 2:11

This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

Prophecy – forthtelling God’s word in a way that that becomes highly personalized to the hearer.

1 Corinthians 14:3

But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.

Distinguishing of spirits – When God reveals the true nature/intent of people to protect His church.

1 John 4:1

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Tongues – In a multi-lingual context, speaking in a language you don’t know to someone who hears in their own language.

Acts 2:6

And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.

Interpretation of tongues – in a multi-lingual context, giving the translation for the others present to know what was said.
