Our Legacy and Treasure
John 14:27
Pastor Jerry Koller

John 14:27

When we think of the term peace, most of us think about an absence of war.
· When we think of the term peace, some of us think about it along the lines of a feeling or an emotion.
· The peace Jesus is referring to is likened to the Hebrew term Shalom.
Shalom has to do with harmony – wholeness - completeness.
Where there is shalom, it means a person, a place, or a situation is the way God intends for it to be. Peace is both a legacy and a treasure.
Legacy—Peace I leave with you.
· A legacy is something that is received from someone who has died.
· It can be understood as an inheritance of a gift.
To atone means to pay the price for or to cover over sin so that we may receive forgiveness.
· It has to do with turning away the wrath of God.
Treasure—...my peace I give you.
· You can consider the peace Jesus gives us a gift.
Treasures are something that are highly prized - something precious - something highly valued by the owner - something considered valuable in a monetary sense.
The gift of peace that Jesus gives us is priceless. It is unlike anything the world has to offer. Jesus made this very clear when He said, I do not give to you as the world gives.
Whenever peace is contingent upon human ability and circumstances, it is temporary at best.

Philippians 4:6-7

John 16:33

The Holy Spirit uses us to spread peace throughout the world primarily through human relationships.
There are somewhere between 55-60 “one another” passages mentioned in the New Testament that informs us of how we can contribute to helping things be the way God intends for them to be. All fall under Jesus’ all-encompassing command.

John 15:12

God uses us to bring about this peace so we must not shirk this responsibility.

Romans 12:18

You and I cannot guarantee that a person, a place, or a situation may be the way God intends for it to be. That is not our responsibility. Our responsibility is to share the peace Jesus gives and leave with others.
APPLICATION
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. You and I have a legacy and a treasurer.
I do not give to you as the world gives. His peace is unlike anything the world offers.
When the cares of this world try to shake your spirit, focus on Jesus’ words: Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. You have a legacy and a treasure.
