September 26, 2021 | The Distraction of Idolatry
Christianity can be confusing, it certainly was at Corinth. The catastrophe that was the church at Corinth was so bad because they were confused about many things! They were confused about their faith, their world, and how the church should operate. They needed to focus on living out the gospel. Our new message series, "In Focus” will help you have focal points that clarify how we live out our faith in an otherwise strange world.

1 Corinthians 10:14-33
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say. Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread. Look at the nation Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar? What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we? All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor. Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake; for the earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains. If one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience’ sake. But if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience’ sake; I mean not your own conscience, but the other man’s; for why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks? Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God; just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.
What is Idolatry?
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. v. 14
Idolatry is excessive devotion to, or reverence for anyone or anything other than the One True God. An idol is anything that replaces God.
Exodus 20:3
You shall have no other gods before Me.
Exodus 20:4
You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
Romans 1:22-25
Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
Why Should We Flee?
…the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons. v. 20
We should flee idolatry because it is the gateway to demonic activity in our lives.
Idolatry is inconsistent with your confession, with your communion, and with your commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ. It invites the demonic into your life through worshiping idols and is offensive to God.
Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
How Should We Live?
All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. v. 23
Seek the good of others.
Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor. v. 24
Seek the glory of God.
Whether then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. v. 31
Seek the goal of salvation.
…not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved. v. 33
