We live in a world full of people and those people need rules in order to have justice. There are other laws that have no justice attached to them, however, like physics, the laws of nature and even the laws made by man.

In contrast is God and His law.

Exodus 20:1-17

There is a beautiful simplicity in these laws and when they are followed to the letter, they create justice, fairness, harmony, and peace.

These laws, however, are often not followed at all and punishments must be assigned to them to maintain their meaning and the pursuit of justice.

God’s law is like a coin with two sides, with the first four pertaining to God and the last six pertaining to each other. Jesus summed it up when being asked what the greatest commandment was.

Mark 12:29-31

Jesus reveals the motives intended to fuel obedience to God’s command, but our motives are often a problem. Jesus illustrates this in the story of the Good Samaritan.

We all have broken some of these commands in life and broken them all in our hearts. That’s a problem because to be guilty of one is to be guilty of all.

James 2:10

Jesus came to earth and to each of us, because He knows we are guilty.

The perfect law designed to bring us justice and peace reveals the reality of who we are and what we deserve.

The law needed fulfillment and Jesus was and is that fulfillment.

Matthew 5:17

The great beauty of the law is that Jesus came to fulfill it and He did that through His death on the cross. He cancelled our debt!

Colossians 2:13-15

We seek to obey God’s commands not to get Him to love us but as a response to the fact that He already loves us and has proven that love.

Jesus left His disciples with a command on the eve of His death.

John 13:34

Jesus commands “to love the way I love you” and shows that example.

It was His love that motivated Jesus to do what He did for us and our greatest response is to live in that love and the obedience that flows out of it.

We are all guilty and the One who was cursed, marginalized and disregarded steps forward and says to the greatest of all authorities, “I’ll pay the debt, give me the punishment, because I love this person.”

Our response to this great love and sacrifice is obedience, because it is our response to how much Jesus loved and continues to love us.

We treat others as we ourselves have been treated - not by them, but by the One who loves us and gave Himself for us.
