Cross City Church
September 12, 2021 | The Life that Wins
Christianity can be confusing, it certainly was at Corinth. The catastrophe that was the church at Corinth was so bad because they were confused about many things! They were confused about their faith, their world, and how the church should operate. They needed to focus on living out the gospel. Our new message series, "In Focus” will help you have focal points that clarify how we live out our faith in an otherwise strange world.

1 Corinthians 9:19-27
For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more. To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though not being myself under the Law, so that I might win those who are under the Law; to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some. I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it. Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
I’m willing to serve others for the Gospel, because I’m wanting to win others with the Gospel.
Be FOCUSED

Be URGENT
Run in such a way that you may win. v. 24
Why do we so urgently pursue the worthless but neglect the eternal?
A theological urgency
…so that I may by all means save some. v. 22
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Jude 22-23
And have mercy on some, who are doubting; save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh.
“Have mercy on them. Snatch them out of the fire.”
A relational urgency
I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh… Romans 9:2-3
A church urgency
…whatever you do, do all to the glory of God…just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of many, so that they may be saved. 1 Corinthians 10:31, 33
“So that they may be saved!”
Be DISCIPLINED
I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified. v. 27
We restrain ourselves from what we want so we can do what we ought when it comes to living out our witness.
If my goal is to change them politically, or morally; if my goal is to correct their wrongs, I’ll never get to talk about the ONE who can change their everything.
