When it comes to relationships, life is complicated, not by design but by our choices and our humanity. The Bible brings clarity to our lives, not confusion. In our new series "It's Complicated" we will continue to apply the truth in God's Word in 1 Corinthians to our complicated lives today.

1 Corinthians 7:1, 7-9, 32-35
Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman…Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that. But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I. But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion…But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and his interests are divided. The woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. This I say for your own benefit; not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote what is appropriate and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord.
It’s Complicated: Relationships, Clarity, Identity
“Context is king” in everything.
Your identity is greater than your status.
1 Corinthians 10:31
Whether, then you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
Have you reached the conclusion that your greatest gift is Christ?
It is good to be single and celibate.
1 Corinthians 7:1
Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman.
1 Corinthians 7:7
Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am. However, each man has his own gift from God…
1 Corinthians 7:35
This I say to your own benefit…to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord.
Why does the Bible say singleness is good?
1. It is good to consider your status as a gift.
…each man has his own gift from God, one in this manner, and another in that. v. 7
2. It is good to demonstrate mastery over desire.
…it is good for them if they remain even as I am. v. 8
3. It is good to be fully focused on pleasing God.
But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord… v. 32
4. It is good to be undistracted and undivided in serving God.
This I say for your own benefit; not to put a restraint on you, but to promote what is appropriate and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord. v. 35
Where we sometimes see the church as an optional service that we come to drink from, Paul correctly sees the church as the non-optional family he consistently comes to invest in.
Can you look at your status as a gift from God, and as something that God can use for His own glory and purpose?
What does it mean to be fully focused and undistracted?
Singles have spiritual children through ministry.
1 Timothy 1:2
To Timothy, my true child in the faith…
3 John 4
I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.
Singles have financial fruit through giving.
Singles have time to have greater ministry involvement.
If we are to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, have you considered how your status allows you to do that for His greater good and glory?
