March 14, 2021 | Sexual Sin in the Church
In our new series, In Not Of, we will continue our journey with the Corinthian church as Paul rebukes them for tolerating sexual sin under a misapplied definition of love. Paul explained that in order to be different than the world that sin cannot be tolerated in the Church. In our culture today tolerance is seen as one of the highest ideals, but just as Paul explained to the Corinthians, we are called to live differently in every aspect of our lives, including how we as believers address immorality.

1 Corinthians 5:1-8
It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father’s wife. You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst. For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present. In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
John 17:16, 18
…they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world…as you sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
We are saints joined with Christ, not sinners joined with satan.
2 Corinthians 6:14-16
Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership; have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God…
Do you know who you are in Christ? Do you realize what He has saved you from and what He has saved you to?
WHAT is the problem?
…there is immorality among you…someone has his father’s wife. v. 1
Immorality is sexual activity with anyone outside of the biblical marriage design of one man and one woman.
1 Corinthians 5:2
…immorality of such a kind that doesn’t exist even among the Gentiles…
HOW should the church respond?
You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst. For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present. In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. v. 2-5
1 Corinthians 5:2
You have become arrogant and have not mourned…
1 Corinthians 5:9, 11
I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people…not to even eat with such a one.
Do you mourn sin in the body, or tolerate it? Can you speak truth in love?
We should confront, not condone.
1 Corinthians 5:2
…so that the one who has done this deed should be removed from your midst…
The Cycle of Accountability:
Confront—Conform—Continue
Matthew 18:15-18
If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
We should speak up, not remain silent.
1 Corinthians 5:3, 5
I…have already judged him who has so committed this…when you are assembled…deliver such a one to satan…
Colossians 1:13-14
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
1 John 5:19-20
We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ.
WHY do we treat sin this way?
Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us celebrate the feast…v. 7-8
Are you rejoicing in your God-given freedom from sin’s grip? Do you remember why we live differently from the rest of the world?
