In today’s passage, James addresses the way too many of us live our lives — professing a faith in God, but demonstrating a self-reliance that almost deny’s His very existence. This kind of living reflects what some have called “practical atheism”. It is not that we fully embrace or even proclaim a total denial of God — but rather that we demonstrate a lack of faith in Him by our actions. James seems to look at that kind of faith, shake his head and say, “C’MON MAN!” His challenge is to reject this temptation and demonstrate a genuine faith in God by living dependent upon Him.

James 4:13–17
13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. James 4:13-17 (NIV)
1. IT LEAVES US TOTALLY UNPREPARED.
2. IT LEADS US INTO ARROGANCE!
3. IT CAUSES US TO MISS OUT ON GOD’S BEST!
So how should we live?
James suggests that there’s a better with to live. He says:
>> ALWAYS PLAN YOUR LIFE WITH GOD’S WILL IN MIND!
Live today for the Lord—and trust the Him with your tomorrow!
