Compromise is the word you want to think about when it comes to the book of Judges. Joshua is a book of conquest, victory, and obedience. Judges is a book of compromise, defeat, and disobedience. When you look at Joshua, Israel won battle after battle; victory after victory. But in the book of Judges, the compromise and experience loss and defeat over and over and over. This is a depressing book, because everyone did whatever they wanted to do.
The cycle that repeats itself 13 times over 330 years is this:
