Love | Crazy Faith Part 3

Love | Crazy Faith Part 3

It is not enough to say we believe in Jesus. We need to put feet to our faith. We are going to circle the wagons around the core of Christianity and ask how to live it out where we live our lives.

The English language has just one word for love. There are three in Hebrew and 6 in Greek, but one of them rises above them all - the word agape.
Jesus defines the greatest commandment with the word agape. It’s how the people would recognize Jesus’ disciples, by their love. They saw it in action and Jesus left them with it 9 times.

John 15:9-13, John 15:17

Paul illustrates that all of the gifts we think make us more spiritual are nothing compared to love.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3

The next section of scripture gives us a measure for grading ourselves.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

There is only one person who got a perfect score on that quiz - Jesus. Only He can make us love like that.
Jesus says, “Abide in my love.” Not abide in yours. And that’s the answer to this most critical part of crazy faith - more of Him and less of me.
In John 13, Jesus shares a meal with His disciples, to tell them about His death - that He would die for them in the greatest act of agape love.
Peter instead says that he would die for Jesus, only to have Jesus say that before morning came, Peter would deny Him three times rather than die for Him.
Peter did that very thing - deny Jesus. And Jesus did the very thing He said He would - die on the cross for the sins of the world.
Jesus rose three days later and appeared to the disciples a number of times. John 21 records a miraculous catch of fish and breakfast with the disciples, after which Jesus took a walk with Peter.

John 21:15-17

Jesus repeats his command three times, the same number of times in which Peter denied Jesus.
Jesus knows how far we are from the expectation of His command and how desperately we need Him as our Savior. Even still, He entrusts His eternal message to us.
