The Birth of the Church: Week 6 - Phil Kendon

The Birth of the Church: Week 6 - Phil Kendon

The story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts chapter 5 is dramatic and shocking. On the one hand, it is comforting to know that the early church was not perfect – it was made up of real people, just like every church today. On the other hand, it is sobering to see just how weighty the consequences of sin really are. But the same way that a miracle gives us a window into the kingdom of God where there is no sickness or suffering, so does judgement give us a window into the kingdom of God where there is no sin or evil. God created everything good and he will return it to that state in due time. Through Jesus he has offered us a way to enter that perfect kingdom.

2 Corinthians 5:10

1. God is present when we meet

- The church is not just a meeting of people – God is present and working in our lives.
2. The kingdom of God is breaking in

- We see it in the healing of a lame man.
- We see it in the judgement of sin.
3. God is overwhelmingly compassionate and kind

Exodus 34:6-7

4. Their sin was deception

- Ananias and Sapphira were trying to appear more spiritual than they were.
5. They sinned against God

- While the consequences of our sin are more obvious towards other people, we sin mostly against God.
6. God’s judgement is fair

- God will ultimately remove everything that destroys his creation.
- God holds us accountable for what we do.
7. There is a substitute

- God has judged our sins in Jesus and by faith we can be saved.
Remember:
For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
