It is truly humbling and inspiring to know that this hymn was written in response to the death of Horatio Spafford’s four daughters. It is hard to imagine the depth of grief he must have felt – and yet somehow his song lifts us out of sadness. He takes us to the solid ground of the love of God for us, which is expressed in the sacrifice of Jesus. If God loves us that much, he will definitely be with us through the challenges we face and will bring us out the other side.

1. Circumstances don’t matter
Circumstances change for better or worse, but there is something that always stays the same.
2. True love is measured by sacrifice
God’s love is not like the love of a fair-weather friend that you can no longer find when times are tough.
3. The ultimate love is shown in the ultimate sacrifice
We can be totally sure of God’s love for us because he was willing to pay the ultimate price.
4. The promise of the future
Jesus is coming back and he will make everything right.
