Mark 10

The Question of Divorce
1He # Mt 19:1-2 set out from there and went to the region of Judea # Lk 1:5 and across the Jordan. # Mt 4:15,25; Lk 3:3; Jn 1:28; 3:26; 10:40 Then crowds converged on Him again and, as He usually did, He began teaching # Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11 them once more. 2Some Pharisees # Mk 7:3 approached Him to test # Jms 1:13 Him. They asked, “Is it lawful # Jn 18:31 for a man to divorce # Lv 21:7 his wife? ” # 1Pt 3:1
3He replied to them, “What did Moses # Ps 77:20; Mt 8:4; Heb 3:2 command you? ”
4They said, “Moses permitted us to write divorce papers # Mt 5:31 and send her away.” # Dt 24:1,3
5But Jesus told them, “He wrote this command for you because of the hardness of your hearts. # Mk 16:14 6But from the beginning # Jn 1:1; Ac 26:4 of creation # Jn 1:3; Rv 3:14 God # Other mss omit God made them male and female. # Gn 1:27; 5:2 # Gn 1:27; 5:2
7For this reason a man will leave # Lk 15:4
his father and mother
and be joined to his wife , # Other mss omit bracketed text
8and the two will become one flesh. # Gn 2:24 # Gn 2:24
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.” # 1Co 7:10-15; Heb 7:26
10Now in the house the disciples questioned Him again about this matter. 11And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife # 1Pt 3:1 and marries # 1Tm 5:14 another commits adultery # Mt 5:27-28 against her. 12Also, if she divorces her husband # Mt 1:19 and marries another, she commits adultery.”
Blessing the Children
13Some # Mt 19:13-15; Lk 18:15-17 people were bringing little children # Lk 1:7 to Him so He might touch them, but His disciples rebuked # 2Tm 4:2 them. 14When Jesus saw it, He was indignant # Lk 13:14 and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me. # Lk 14:26 Don’t stop # 1Co 14:39 them, for the kingdom of God # Mk 1:15 belongs to such as these. 15I assure you: # Ps 72:19; Rv 22:21 Whoever does not welcome # Or not receive # Ac 17:11 the kingdom of God like a little child # Lk 1:7 will never enter it.” 16After taking them in His arms, He laid His hands on # 1Tm 5:22 them and blessed # Gn 48:15 them.
The Rich Young Ruler
17As # Mt 19:16-30; Lk 18:18-30 He was setting out on a journey, # Mk 8:27 a man ran up, knelt down # Mt 17:14; 27:29; Mk 1:40 before Him, and asked Him, “Good # Gn 1:31 Teacher, # Mk 4:38; Eph 4:11 what must I do to inherit # Rv 21:7 eternal life? ” # Lk 10:25-28; Jn 12:25; Ac 13:48
18“Why do you call Me good? ” Jesus asked him. “No one is good but One — God. # Ps 69:16 19You know the commandments:
Do not murder; # Mt 5:21
do not commit adultery; # Mt 5:27-28
do not steal; # Eph 4:28
do not bear false witness; # Pr 6:19
do not defraud; # 1Co 6:7-8; 7:5; 1Tm 6:5; Jms 5:4
honor # 1Tm 5:3 your father and mother.” # Ex 21:15 # Ex 20:12-16; Dt 5:16-20
20He said to Him, “Teacher, # Mk 4:38; Eph 4:11 I have kept all these from my youth.”
21Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him # Lk 6:35; 2Th 2:13; Heb 12:6 and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, # Mk 14:7; Rm 15:26 and you will have treasure # 2Co 4:7 in heaven. # Mt 6:20; 13:44; Lk 12:33 Then come, # Other mss add taking up the cross, and follow Me.” # Jn 8:12 22But he was stunned # Or he became gloomy at this demand, and he went away grieving, # 2Co 2:2 because he had many possessions. # Ac 2:45; 5:1
Possessions and the Kingdom
23Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth # Ac 4:37; 8:18,20; 24:26 to enter the kingdom of God! ” # Mk 1:15 24But the disciples were astonished at His words. Again Jesus said to them, “Children, # Lk 1:7 how hard it is # Other mss add for those trusting in wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich # Gn 24:35; Rv 2:9 person to enter the kingdom of God.”
26So they were even more astonished, saying to one another, “Then who can be saved? ” # Ac 16:30; Eph 2:8
27Looking at them, Jesus said, “With men it is impossible, # Heb 6:4 but not with God, because all things are possible with God.”
28Peter # Lk 6:14; Ac 10:32 began to tell Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.”
29“I assure you,” # Rv 22:21 Jesus said, “there is no one who has left house, brothers or sisters, mother or father, # Other mss add or wife children, or fields because of Me and the gospel, # Mk 1:1; Php 1:5 30who will not receive 100 times # Lk 21:8 more, now at this time # Lk 20:10 — houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions # Mt 13:21 — and eternal life # Jn 12:25; Ac 13:48 in the age to come. # Mt 12:32; Lk 20:35; Eph 1:21; 2:7 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” # Mk 9:35
The Third Prediction of His Death
32They # Mt 20:17-19; Lk 18:31-34 were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, # Ps 79:1; Mt 23:37 and Jesus was walking ahead of them. They were astonished, but those who followed Him were afraid. # Ps 147:11; Pr 1:7; Rv 14:7 Taking the Twelve aside again, He began to tell them the things that would happen to Him. # Jn 6:61
33“Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man # Mk 2:10 will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, # Mt 2:4 and they will condemn Him to death. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles, # Mk 8:31; 9:31 34and they will mock Him, spit on Him, flog # Or scourge Him, and kill Him, and He will rise # Mt 16:21; Ac 2:24 after three days.” # Lk 9:22
Suffering and Service
35Then # Mt 20:20-28 James # Ac 12:2 and John, # Jn 21:7 the sons of Zebedee, # Jn 21:2 approached Him and said, “Teacher, # Mk 4:38; Eph 4:11 we want You to do something for us if we ask You.”
36“What do you want Me to do for you? ” He asked them.
37They answered Him, “Allow us to sit at Your right and at Your left in Your glory.” # Mt 19:28; Lk 9:26
38But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you’re asking. # Jn 11:22 Are you able to drink the cup # Ps 75:8 I drink or to be baptized with the baptism # Lk 12:50; Ac 22:16 I am baptized with? ” # Lk 12:50; Rm 6:3; 2Co 4:10-11; Gl 2:20
39“We are able,” they told Him.
Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with. # Ac 12:2; Rv 1:9 40But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to give; instead, it is for those it has been prepared for.” 41When the other 10 disciples heard this, they began to be indignant with James and John. # Jn 21:7
42Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate # Ac 19:16; 1Pt 5:3 them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them. 43But it must not be like that among you. # Mk 9:35; 10:45 On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, # Lk 22:26 44and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave # Mt 10:24; Php 2:7; Rv 1:1 to all. 45For even the Son of Man # Mk 2:10 did not come to be served, but to serve, # Jn 13:13-15; Php 2:7 and to give His life # Jn 6:51; 10:15; Gl 2:20 — a ransom # Lv 27:31; Ps 49:8; Mt 26:28; Eph 1:7 for many.” # Or in the place of many ; Is 53:10-12 # Is 52:13–53:12; Mt 20:28
A Blind Man Healed
46They # Mt 20:29-34; Lk 18:35-43 came to Jericho. # Nm 22:1 And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, Bartimaeus (the son of Timaeus), a blind # Mt 15:14 beggar, # Jn 9:8 was sitting by the road. # Mk 8:27 47When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, # Mk 14:67 he began to cry out, “Son of David, # 2Ch 1:1; Mt 1:1; Rm 1:3 Jesus, have mercy # Mt 5:7; Mk 5:19; Lk 1:50 on me! ” # Mt 15:22; 17:15; Mk 10:48; Lk 16:24 48Many people told him to keep quiet, but he was crying out all the more, “Have mercy on me, # Mk 10:47 Son of David! ”
49Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”
So they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! # Jn 16:33 Get up; He’s calling for you.” 50He threw off his coat, # Lk 19:36 jumped up, and came to Jesus.
51Then Jesus answered him, “What do you want # Mk 1:40 Me to do for you? ”
“Rabbouni,” # Hb for my teacher # Jn 20:16 the blind man told Him, “I want to see! ”
52“Go your way,” Jesus told him. “Your faith has healed you.” # Mt 9:22; Mk 6:56; Lk 5:20 Immediately he could see and began to follow Him on the road.
