Temptations to Sin
1And he said to his disciples, #Matt. 18:7 “Temptations to sin#17:1 Greek Stumbling blocks are #See Matt. 13:41 sure to come, but #ch. 22:22woe to the one through whom they come! 2#Matt. 18:6; Mark 9:42It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.#17:2 Greek stumble 3Pay attention to yourselves! #Matt. 18:15, 21, 22 If your brother sins, #Lev. 19:17 rebuke him, and if he repents, #See Matt. 6:14forgive him, 4and if he sins against you #[Matt. 18:21]seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
Increase Our Faith
5 # See Mark 6:30 The apostles said to the Lord, #[Mark 9:24]“Increase our faith!” 6And the Lord said, #Matt. 17:20 “If you had faith like #Matt. 13:31 a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this #[ch. 19:4 (Gk.)]mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
Unworthy Servants
7 “Will any one of you who has a servant # 17:7 Or bondservant ; also verse 9 plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? 8Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and #John 13:4; [ch. 12:35, 37]dress properly,#17:8 Greek gird yourself and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? 9Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are #Matt. 25:30; [Job 22:2, 3; 35:7; Rom. 11:35]unworthy servants;#17:10 Or bondservants we have only done what was our duty.’”
Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers
11 # See ch. 9:51 On the way to Jerusalem #[John 4:3, 4]; See Matt. 19:1he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. 12And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers,#17:12 Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13 #See Lev. 13:45, 46who stood at a distance 13and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” 14When he saw them he said to them, “Go and #ch. 5:14; Lev. 13:2–14:32; Matt. 8:4show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. 15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, #See ch. 13:13praising God with a loud voice; 16and #ch. 5:12; Num. 16:22; [Matt. 26:39] he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was #See Matt. 10:5a Samaritan. 17Then Jesus answered, “Were not #ver. 12ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18Was no one found to return and #See John 9:24 give praise to God except this #Isa. 66:5foreigner?” 19And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; #See Mark 10:52your faith has #See Mark 10:52made you well.”#17:19 Or has saved you
The Coming of the Kingdom
20Being asked by the Pharisees #ch. 19:11; Acts 1:6 when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God #[ch. 12:39]is not coming in ways that can be observed, 21nor #[ver. 23]will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”#17:21 Or within you, or within your grasp
22And he said to the disciples, #ch. 5:35; 21:6; Matt. 9:15; Mark 2:20; [ch. 19:43; 23:29; John 4:21] “The days are coming when you will desire #John 8:56; [Amos 5:18]to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23#ch. 21:8; Matt. 24:23; Mark 13:21; [ver. 21]And they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’ Do not go out or follow them. 24#Matt. 24:27 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be #See 1 Cor. 1:8in his day.#17:24 Some manuscripts omit in his day 25But first #See ch. 13:33; Matt. 16:21; 17:22; Mark 8:31he must suffer many things and #See ch. 13:33; Matt. 16:21; 17:22; Mark 8:31be rejected by this generation. 26#Gen. 6:5; 7:7; Matt. 24:37; [1 Thess. 5:3] Just as it was in the days of #Heb. 11:7; 1 Pet. 3:20; 2 Pet. 2:5Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27#Matt. 24:38, 39They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28Likewise, just as it was in the days of #2 Pet. 2:7Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 29#Gen. 19:16, 24; 2 Pet. 2:6but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— 30so will it be #1 Cor. 1:7; 2 Thess. 1:7; 1 Pet. 1:7, 13; 4:13; [Matt. 16:27; 24:44]on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31On that day, #ch. 21:21; Matt. 24:17, 18; Mark 13:15, 16 let the one who is on #See ch. 5:19the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. 32#Gen. 19:26Remember Lot’s wife. 33#See Matt. 10:39 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will #Acts 7:19 (Gk.)keep it. 34I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left. 35#Matt. 24:41 There will be two women #Ex. 11:5; Isa. 47:2grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”#17:35 Some manuscripts add verse 36: Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left 37And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, #Matt. 24:28; [Job 39:30]“Where the corpse#17:37 Greek body is, there the vultures#17:37 Or eagles will gather.”
