Mark 9

9
1Then he said to them, “Truly I tell you,#Ps 72:19; Rv 22:21 there are some standing here who will not taste death#Mk 13:28–32; 14:25; Jn 21:22–23; 2Pt 3:4 until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”#Lk 6:19
The Transfiguration
2After#Mt 17:1–8; Lk 9:28–36 six days#Ex 24:15–18; Hs 6:2 Jesus took Peter, James, and John#Mt 10:2; Mk 5:37; 13:3; 14:33; Ac 1:13 and led them up a high mountain#Mt 4:8; 2Pt 1:18 by themselves to be alone. He was transfigured#Rm 12:2; 2Co 3:18 in front of them, 3and his clothes#Lk 19:36 became dazzling — extremely white#Rv 3:4 as no launderer on earth could whiten#Rv 7:14 them. 4Elijah#Mk 8:28 appeared to them with Moses,#Ps 77:20; Mt 8:4; Heb 3:2 and they were talking with Jesus. 5Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,#Jn 11:8 it’s good#Gn 1:31 for us to be here. Let’s set up three shelters:#Ex 25:9 one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” —  6because he did not know what to say,#Mk 14:40 since they were terrified.#Heb 12:21
7A cloud#Ex 24:15; Mt 26:64 appeared, overshadowing#Lk 1:35 them, and a voice#Jn 5:37 came from the cloud:#2Pt 1:16–18 “This is my beloved#Eph 1:6; Phm 1 Son;#Lk 20:13; Jn 5:19 listen to him!” #Dt 18:15
8Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
9As#Mt 17:9–13 they were coming down the mountain,#Mt 4:8 he ordered them to tell no one what they had seen#Lk 8:56 until the Son of Man#Mk 2:10 had risen#Mt 16:21; Lk 18:33 from the dead.#Jn 20:9 10They kept this word#Mk 4:14 to themselves, questioning what “rising from the dead” meant.
11Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes#Mt 2:4 say that Elijah must come first?” #Mal 4:5
12 “Elijah does come first and restores # Mk 8:25 all things,”#Lk 1:17 he replied. “Why then is it written#Ac 15:15 that the Son of Man must suffer#Mk 8:31 many things and be treated with contempt?#Lk 23:11 13But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written#Mk 1:2 about him.”
The Power of Faith over a Demon
14When#Mt 17:14–20; Lk 9:37–42 they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes disputing#Mk 8:11 with them. 15When the whole crowd saw him, they were amazed and ran to greet him. 16He asked them, “What are you arguing with them about?”
17Someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher,#Mk 4:38; Eph 4:11 I brought my son to you. He has a spirit#Lk 11:24; 1Tm 4:1; 1Jn 4:1 that makes him unable to speak.#Mk 7:37 18Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”
19He replied to them, “You unbelieving#Lk 12:46 generation, how long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me.” 20So they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw him, it immediately threw the boy into convulsions. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21“How long has this been happening to him?” Jesus asked his father.
“From childhood,” he said. 22“And many times it has thrown him into fire or water to destroy#Jn 6:27 him. But if you can do anything, have compassion#Lk 15:20 on us and help us.”
23Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’?#9:23 Other mss add believe Everything is possible#Mt 17:20; Jn 11:40 for the one who believes.”#Jn 3:16; Ac 10:43; Rm 10:9; 1Pt 1:8–10
24Immediately the father of the boy cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”
25When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked#2Tm 4:2 the unclean#2Co 6:17 spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf#Lk 7:22 spirit, I command you: Come out of him and never enter him again.”
26Then it came out, shrieking and throwing him into terrible convulsions.#Mk 1:26 The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He’s dead.” 27But Jesus, taking him by the hand, raised him,#Mk 1:31 and he stood up.
28After he had gone into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
29And he told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer.”#9:29 Other mss add and fasting#Ac 12:5; 16:13; Phm 22
The Second Prediction of His Death
30Then#Mt 17:22–23; Lk 9:43–45 they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but he did not want anyone to know it.#Mk 1:44 31For he was teaching#Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11 his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man#Mk 2:10 is going to be betrayed#9:31 Or handed over into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise#Mt 16:21; Lk 18:33; Ac 2:24 three days later.”#Mk 8:31; Lk 9:22 32But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask him.#Mk 4:40; Lk 2:50
Who Is the Greatest?
33They#Mt 18:1–10; Lk 9:46–50 came to Capernaum.#Lk 10:15 When he was in the house,#Mk 1:29 he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”#Mk 8:27 34But they were silent,#Mk 3:4 because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.#Lk 22:24–27; Ac 8:9 35Sitting down, he called the Twelve#Mk 11:11 and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all.”#Mt 20:16–27; 23:11; Mk 10:43–44; Lk 22:26 36He took a child,#Lk 1:7 had him stand among them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37“Whoever welcomes#9:37 Or “Whoever receives one little child such as this in my name#Jn 10:25 welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me does not welcome me, but him who sent#Mt 15:24; Mk 12:6; Jn 3:16–17 me.”#Mt 10:40
In His Name
38John#Jn 21:7 said to him, “Teacher,#Mk 4:38 we saw someone#9:38 Other mss add who didn’t go along with us driving out demons#Mk 3:15; Rv 9:20 in your name,#Jn 10:25; 14:13 and we tried to stop him because he wasn’t following us.”#Nm 11:26–30
39 “Don’t stop him,” said Jesus, “because there is no one who will perform a miracle#Ac 19:11 in my name who can soon afterward speak evil of me. 40For whoever is not against us is for us.#Mt 12:30; Lk 11:23 41And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink#Mt 10:42; 25:35–42; Rm 12:20 in my name, because you belong to Christ#Mt 1:17; Eph 5:2 — truly I tell you,#Rv 22:21 he will never lose his reward.#Mt 10:42; 2Pt 2:13
Warnings from Jesus
42 “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to fall away # Ex 23:33; Jn 6:35 — it would be better for him if a heavy millstone#Jdg 9:53; Mt 24:41; Rv 18:22 were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
43 “And if your hand causes you to fall away, cut it off. # Mt 5:29–30 It is better for you to enter life maimed#Mt 15:30–31 than to have two hands and go to hell, the unquenchable fire.#9:43 Some mss include v. 44: Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.#Mt 3:12; 5:22; 25:41; 2Th 1:8 45And if your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off.
