Daniel’s Prayer for the People
1In the first year #Dan. 1:21of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the lineage of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans— 2in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the Lord through #2 Chr. 36:21; Ezra 1:1; Jer. 25:11, 12; 29:10; Zech. 7:5Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
3#Neh. 1:4; Dan. 6:10; 10:15Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. 4And I prayed to the Lord my God, and made confession, and said, “O #Ex. 20:6Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, 5#1 Kin. 8:47, 48; Neh. 9:33; Ps. 106:6; Is. 64:5–7; Jer. 14:7we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. 6#2 Chr. 36:15; Jer. 44:4, 5Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land. 7O Lord, #Neh. 9:33righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You.
8“O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. 9#(Neh. 9:17; Ps. 130:4, 7)To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him. 10We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets. 11Yes, #Is. 1:3–6; Jer. 8:5–10all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the #Lev. 26:14; Neh. 1:6; Ps. 106:6Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him. 12And He has #Is. 44:26; Jer. 44:2–6; Lam. 2:17; Zech. 1:6confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster; #Lam. 1:12; 2:13; Ezek. 5:9; (Amos 3:2)for under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem.
13#Lev. 26:14–45; Deut.rl 263208 28:15–68; Lam. 2:17“As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us; #Job 36:13; Is. 9:13; Jer. 2:30; Hos. 7:7yet we have not made our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth. 14Therefore the Lord has #Jer. 31:28; 44:27kept the disaster in mind, and brought it upon us; for #Neh. 9:33the Lord our God is righteous in all the works which He does, though we have not obeyed His voice. 15And now, O Lord our God, #Ex. 32:11; 1 Kin. 8:51; Neh. 1:10who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and made Yourself #Ex. 14:18; Neh. 9:10; Jer. 32:20a name, as it is this day—we have sinned, we have done wickedly!
16“O Lord, #1 Sam. 12:7; Ps. 31:1; Mic. 6:4, 5according to all Your righteousness, I pray, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your city Jerusalem, #Ps. 87:1–3; Dan. 9:20; Joel 3:17; Zech. 8:3Your holy mountain; because for our sins, #Ex. 20:5and for the iniquities of our fathers, #Ps. 122:6; Jer. 29:7; Lam. 2:16Jerusalem and Your people #Ps. 79:4are a reproach to all those around us. 17Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, #Num. 6:24–26; Ps. 80:3, 7, 19and #Lam. 5:18for the Lord’s sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, #(John 16:24)which is desolate. 18#Is. 37:17O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes #Ex. 3:7and see our desolations, and the city #Jer. 25:29which is called by Your name; for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies. 19O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”
The Seventy-Weeks Prophecy
20Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God, 21yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man #Dan. 8:16; Luke 1:19, 26Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. 22And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. 23At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly #Dan. 10:11, 19beloved; therefore #Matt. 24:15consider the matter, and understand the vision:
24“Seventy weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
To finish the transgression,
To make an end of sins,
#2 Chr. 29:24; (Is. 53:10); Acts 10:43; (Rom. 5:10); Heb. 9:12, 14To make reconciliation for iniquity,
#Rev. 14:6To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
#Ps. 45:7And to anoint the Most Holy.
25“Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until #Luke 2:1, 2; John 1:41; 4:25Messiah #Is. 55:4the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
The street shall be built again, and the wall,
Even in troublesome times.
26“And after the sixty-two weeks
#(Is. 53:8); Matt. 27:50; Mark 9:12; 15:37; (Luke 23:46; 24:26); John 19:30; Acts 8:32Messiah shall be cut off, #(1 Pet. 2:21)but not for Himself;
And #Matt. 22:7the people of the prince who is to come
#Matt. 24:2; Mark 13:2; Luke 19:43, 44Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27Then he shall confirm #Is. 42:6a covenant with #(Matt. 26:28)many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
#Dan. 11:36Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.”
